Going Dutch On the First Date

In modern days, more and more women consider going Dutch on the first date is perfect to suggest their ability to share financial responsibility with their potential partner. However, going Dutch might be construed differently than intended. There is no clean-cut rule on when to go Dutch. Here is what we think for the independent women out there:

What Type of Date is the First Date?

It all depends on the type of date. If it is more of a getting-to-know-someone-quickly, you should go Dutch. Simple criteria include location, time of day and cost. If it is a quick bite for lunch or light dinner, pick up your own check. If it is quick drinks after work, you buy another round.

However, if it’s a big night out like a romantic dinner, offer to pay and really mean it, but if the man insists on paying, don’t turn it down. Just pick up the check next time. It’s not worth it to make an awkward situation out of who’s paying.

Will there be a Second Date?

By the end of a first date, you should know if you want to go out on a second one, which might make all the difference in who should pay. If there aren't any sparks, don't leave the guy with the bill. Politely offer to pay half, which in itself might let him know you didn't feel a connection. Later, when he calls, you'll feel perfectly fine telling him you are not interested.

Who Asked Whom Out First?

By asking someone out on a date, whether it’s the girl asking the guy or the guy asking the girl, it is generally assumed the person doing the asking should at least make an offer to pick up the WHOLE check. This is because, when you ask someone on a date, you’re acting as the host, just like if you invited a friend over for dinner, you wouldn’t ask for half of the grocery bill.

Tips for Men

Generally, regardless of the above, it is still a good idea for the man to offer to pay, because it demonstrates good manners and chivalry. And to most of women, it’s a sign that he is willing to spend money on the relationship. However, if you’re a man who prefers going Dutch, opt for a more casual first date or even a no-cost date, which won’t leave you feeling awkward when the check arrives.
